India greenlights structural overhaul of major ports

The Indian Union of Cabinet approved the “Major Ports Authority Bill”, replacing existent regulations and boosting Indian ports’ efficiency by enabling decision-making autonomy.

SC Ports awarded grant to upgrade infrastructure

South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) was awarded approximately $20 million federal grant to assist with building vital infrastructure at Wando Welch Terminal in support of the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project.

The US Department of Transportation awarded the Port Infrastructure Development Grant for SC Ports’ Wando Welch Terminal Wharf Toe Wall and Berth Deepening Project. The funds will go toward building a toe wall and deepening three berths at the Wando terminal.

Red Sea Gateway Terminal receives advanced equipment

The Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) recently accepted the first shipment of advanced terminal equipment, including terminal trucks and trailers. Specifically, the new equipment will give a boost to the port and quay operations located at the Northern Part of Jeddah Islamic Port (JIP).

JAXPORT awarded $93 million for its deepening project

The US Federal government recently granted $93 million to JAXPORT, concerning the next phase of its upgrade project. Namely, the investment will focus on the deepening of Jacksonville shipping channel to 47 feet from its existing depth of 40 feet.

The 47-foot depth is required to accommodate more cargo aboard the larger ships calling on JAXPORT from destinations throughout Asia and other world markets through both the Panama and Suez canals.

Expansion works begin at Port of Sines

Portuguese Port of Sines announced that the expansion works of the Port of Sines will begin with the consignment of the East Breakwater enlargement, thus allowing the port to double the containerized cargo installed capacity.

Portuguese company Conduril – Engenharia SA has undertaken the works for extension of the Port of Sines’ East Breakwater.

With a total investment of approximately 72 million euros, the contract comprises the enlargement of the breakwater by 750 meters.

Mozambique’s port Maputo achieved 8% cargo handling increase in 2019

Port Maputo in Mozambique announced that it reached 21 million tonnes in 2019, surpassing its 2018 record and achieving an 8% growth. The port expects that in 2020 will see more growth and increased cargo handling efficiency.

Specifically, the 8% increase was mainly caused by chrome handling and a substantial growth in container handling and magnetite.

New agreement for port of Bronka boost

Upgrades continue for Sogester Luanda and Namibe infrastructure

During 2019, the Sogester Container Terminal, located in the Port of Luanda, Angola, invested about $25 million in terminal handling equipment, IT system upgrades and facilities. In fact, January 2020 saw the arrival of an LH800 mobile harbour crane, with a 20-row outreach.

Port of Savannah to get new container terminal space

Griff Lynch, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority, announced the acquisition of 145 contiguous acres to the Port of Savannah, or more than 1 million twenty-foot equivalent container units in annual capacity.
