Elbe deepening now crucial as throughput at port of Hamburg is still falling

Container throughput at the port of Hamburg declined for the second consecutive year in 2018.
The port’s throughput was down to 8.73m teu, adding urgency to the completion of the long-awaited deepening and widening programme in the river Elbe.
Although this represents a marginal 1% year-on-year fall in containers handled at Hamburg’s box terminals, it has to be read in context with the strong growth achieved at rival North European hubs Rotterdam …

Celso Banas killed in container ship boiler-room blast (BBC)

A sailor was killed when a boiler exploded on a cargo ship as it prepared to dock in the UK, an inquest heard.

Celso Banas, 35, from the Philippines, died in the blast aboard the Manhattan Bridge at Felixstowe, Suffolk, on 19 January 2017.

A jury at Suffolk Coroner’s Court heard that a safety alarm on the boiler had tripped “about six times” that day but the crew did not consider it unusual.

Ship owner K Line Europe said at the time a “boiler back-fire” had occurred.

Felixstowe to provide more capacity for growing DFDS ro-ro traffic

The port of Felixstowe has announced that it is to increase its ro-ro capacity for ferry operator DFDS by some 40%.
The development could be seen to be preparation for a surge in demand for services outside the cross-Channel Dover Straits corridor post-Brexit, but a source at the port said it was already in its plans and the timing with Brexit was “largely coincidental”.
The UK’s largest container port will build a …

Documentary: How shore leave at Felixstowe Seafarer Centre feels like

An observational short documentary by the UK director, Eleanor Mortimer, depicts how a shore leave for a cargo-ship crew at the Felixstowe Seafarer Centre feels like.

Due to visa restrictions and short turnarounds, many crews of international cargo ships stay in port after docking. Their brief stints ashore are frequently spent in seafarers’ centres, where they can unwind and connect with families who are often oceans away, before climbing back aboard and shipping out.

As the UK is an island...
