A marketshare conundrum for liners, as expiry of EC block exemption nears

In a year and half, the deepsea alliance structure could find itself on the wrong side of European competition legislation.
Yesterday, the European Commission reopened its investigation into the block exemption that currently applies to container shipping, and which allows them to operate alliances on trades that serve the EU.
Brought into law in 2010 – following the EU’s decision to outlaw the old conference system that allowed shipping lines to jointly set freight rates – the …

Rush for space on Asia-Europe as box carriers spark new capacity crunch

North European shippers are scrambling to book space on October sailings to Asia ahead of a new capacity crunch.
The decision by ocean carriers to void 11 voyages from Asia to North Europe nest month to halt the slide in container spot rates will result in a similar number of cancelled backhaul sailings in November and December.
One UK forwarder told The Loadstar today he was encouraging his customers to bring forward as …

Cheap labour still diverting Indian logistics players from new technology

Cheap labour has delayed the digitisation of Indian logistics, but forwarders are beginning to recognise the benefits of automation and its global opportunities.
At this week’s Fiata World Congress in Delhi, chief executive of Freight Systems David Philips said the country had made “tremendous” efforts in recent years, but more was needed.
“These tremendous efforts are showing obvious results, just look at India’s World Bank rating – it has never been higher,” he said.

Felixstowe box congestion spreads to Southampton, just in time for Xmas rush

The UK’s two biggest container ports appear to have hit crisis level.
UK retailers potentially face weeks of delays in getting their Christmas stock onto the shelves in time for the peak consumer spending rush.
Moreover, UK exporters to Asia can virtually forget about getting containers shipped in October, due to carriers blanking a huge 11 eastbound voyages in the month.
And many of the sailings that survive will be ‘cut & run’, without loading, due …

Shippers want ‘a market approach’ dialogue on shipping line bunker surcharges

As crude oil races towards $100 a barrel, the European Shippers’ Council has called for “a market approach” dialogue on shipping line bunker surcharge mechanisms ahead of the IMO 2020 sulphur cap.
Brent crude hit a four-year high yesterday, at $82 per barrel, pushing up the price of IFO 380 heavy fuel oil (HFO) above $450 per ton.
The current cost of low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) – compliant with the new regulations – is …
