Philippines strengthens compliance with STCW Convention

The President of Philippines issued an executive order (EO), in late September, further strengthening the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to ensure the country’s full compliance with the 1978 International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

Requirements when employing seafarers under 18 years old

Marshall Islands (RMI) Maritime Administrator published a notice to ensure shipboard occupational health and safety programs (SOHSP). It also presents work restrictions that are considered as hazardous for seafarers under 18 years, according to the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006).

According to the notice, shipowners are responsible for making sure that seafarers have occupational health protection and live, work, and train on board vessels in a safe and hygienic environment.
