IMO ‘kills remaining hopes for requiring the building of more efficient containerships’

Efforts to decarbonise the shipping sector have taken a step back after the IMO overturned plans for new design standards.
A bid to impose a 40% efficiency improvement requirement on all containerships built from 2022 onwards – based on 2008 standards – was put in abeyance until the IMO meets again next May.

Delivery of world’s first LNG cruise ship delayed

German shipyard Meyer Werft informed that it will delay the delivery of AIDAnova, the world’s first LNG fueled cruise ship. Before this announcement, AIDA Cruises was planned to receive the cruise ship on November 15, in Bremerhaven.

As Meyer Werft said, AIDAnova is a very complex, innovative ship with many new technical developments. It also presents a challenge for commissioning and testing.

Watch: Azipods installation on Spectrum of the Seas

Royal Caribbean published a video, depicting ‘Spectrum of the Seas’ having its azipods installed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Each Azipod is 200 tons and takes 1.5 days to install.

A 400-ton low loader is positioning the azipods underneath the ship.

The azipods can provide ‘Spectrum of the Seas’ with 41 megawatts of propulsion power, while the ship’s propellers will be attached to the azipods in February, completing the propulsion system.

Korea to restructure policy for shipbuilding industry

Metal Shark Alabama, Bayou La Batre, Ala., has announced a new contract to build three 120’x35′ river towboats for Florida Marine Transporters Inc., Mandeville, La.

The four-decked, welded-steel, USCG Subchapter “M”-compliant towboats were designed by John W. Gilbert Associates Inc., Hingham, Mass., and will be powered by twin Caterpillar 3512C Tier 3 marine diesel engines rated at 1,911 hp each.
