Watch: An Investigative Documentary On Shipping Emissions

How to kill the planet and get away with it. An investigative documentary into shipping emissions. Black Trail is an agenda-setting collaborative investigation into the environmental impacts of the shipping industry — a sector that is all but untouchable as it receives eye-watering subsidies and stashes its profits in tax havens, all the while polluting with impunity.

This collaboration brings together journalists from newsrooms and TV networks across Europe, including Expresso and SIC TV...

Five Practical Steps To Tackle Portside Pollution

Cavotec, in its twitter page, describes the five steps needed to take charge of portside pollution.

Shipping emissions

The shipping industry is responsible for more than 2.5% of the world’s emissions. If the shipping sector were a country, it would be the sixth largest polluter in the world. But this can be changed.

We have the technology today that can be retrofitted to existing ships to reduce harmful emissions. We also have the technology to upgrade our ports to reduce pollution. All it takes...

Maersk to launch the world’s first carbon-neutral box ship by 2023

Maersk Line announced today it would be operating the world’s first carbon-neutral containership by 2023 – some seven years earlier than planned.
A company spokesman confirmed to The Loadstar that a newbuild 2,000 teu feeder vessel would be equipped with dual-fuel technology that would allow it to run on methanol or very-low-sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO).
The vessel is scheduled to begin operating on one of the carrier’s intra-regional networks in 2023.
In 2018, Maersk outlined a plan for this to...

IMO Environment Protection Committee Approves Amendments To Cut Ship Emissions

pollution sunset

Draft new mandatory regulations to cut the carbon intensity of existing ships have been approved by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), meeting in virtual session from 16-20 November 2020.

This builds on current mandatory energy efficiency requirements to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. The MEPC also agreed on the terms of reference for assessing the possible impacts on States, paying particular attention to the...

Panama Missing $15 Billion/Year Amid Registered Shipping Emissions

  • Carrying capacity of the world’s 60,000 largest ocean-bound vessels has increased from 800 million deadweight tons in the year 2000 to over 2 billion in 2020.
  • At the moment, most of the world’s ships are registered in just a handful of nations.
  • By registering in such offshore locations, these ‘flag states’ set the standard by which ships should be certified.
  • Ships are essentially fronts for the oil industry’s waste, and masquerade themselves by carrying containers, goods and grain across the...

Industry Cannot Ignore Any Area Of Operational Fuel Wastage To Meet Emissions Targets

Singular Point - IMO2020 - 2

With the International Maritime Organisation announcing a goals-based approach to emissions reductions for sulphur, nitrogen and carbon oxides over the next two decades, shipping owners and operators must use vessel data to build a fuller picture of unnecessary fuel consumption.

This is according to GreenSteam, a marine data intelligence business that helps operators cut fuel wastage and reduce emissions by optimizing vessel performance.

While the shipping industry has been preparing for the...

Users and polluters will pay in drive towards major cut in transport emissions

The transport sector will be forced to significantly cut emissions following the election of future European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.
She has made a Green Deal the platform of her presidency.
But while there will be inevitable cost hikes and significant change, there are also opportunities – or commercial imperatives.
Transport accounts for 25% of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions, and it needs to reduce those by 90% by 2050.
