Emissions reporting has upped the ante – with container shipping statistics labelled as “quite favourable”, while the impact on climate change from aviation contrails will triple by 2050.

Banks push the box lines to reduce emissions, while air cargo procrastinates

Box lines are set to come under more environmental pressure, following a decision by major banks to factor emissions into lending decisions. 
Eleven major banks, with total loan portfolios to global shipping worth some $100bn, will add climate considerations into lending decisions to incentivise industry decarbonisation.

Alarming EC’s forecast for shipping emissions

Global shipping emissions are predicted to increase by between 50% and 250% by 2050 – depending on future economic and energy developments, according to the European Commission.

In line with the EU’s calls for a global approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, since the beginning of the year, large ships using EU ports have been required to report their verified annual emissions and other relevant information.
