Northern Sea Route Traffic jumps more than 80 percent as COSCO of China completes five transits with more on the way. Shipping giant Maersk also active on route as well as a number of cruise ships.
Shipping traffic along Russia’s Northern Sea Route reached new heights during the first eight months of 2018 as cargo volume increased by more than 80 percent compared to the same period last year, Russian media outlets report. The route is, at least during the short summer season, increasingly...

Thomas Öström, Founder, Board Member and CEO of Climeon AB

Thomas Öström is the passionate person who wanted to find the solution to the climate change. He is challenged by the use of fossil fuel and had an idea on how to use the energy in waste heat from industries and low-temperature geothermal heat to generate electricity. The company Climeon started in 2011 and has entered the maritime industry by turning heat into clean electricity, unaffected by weather conditions.

The magic of the IRR: Are high returns prompting the return of investment funds in shipping?

The internal rate of return, or simply the IRR, is the magic figure that private equity fund managers, shipping-focused investors and affluent shipowners alike employ to determine if an investment makes sense.

The investment firm recently launched by the prominent Greek shipowner George Livanos and two bankers, as well as the launch of Schulte Group’s shipping fund, has prompted me to explore the power of IRR and engage in some simple number crunching.

Take a five-year-old, 9,000 TEU...

East Siberian Sea Most Dangerous for Arctic Shipping

The risk for ship accidents varies across different Arctic seas. The East Siberian Sea has been found to be most the dangerous.

The East Siberian Sea has been found to have the highest risk for ship collision, sinking of ships (foundering), and ships running aground, mostly because of more severe ice conditions, such as the earlier and quicker build-up of ice at the end of summer.

Winters are very cold in that area, with the mean temperature at -30 degrees C and the entire sea covered with ice....

The great scrubber conundrum

It’s been six months since my last 2020 dispatch. Since then, I’ve spent time at major industry gatherings in London (IP week) and Athens (Posidonia) and yet I’m just as uncertain about 2020 as I was then. My only comfort is that judging by my numerous conversations at Posidonia, I’m far from alone.

By now, anyone remotely involved in shipping should know about the importance of January 1, 2020 — the date environmental restrictions on sulfur content in bunker fuel come into effect. Some still...
