Wabash National minimizes Q2 pandemic impact

Wabash National Corp. (NYSE: WNC) beat top- and bottom-line estimates in the second quarter. It maintained some production as truck makers shut down for April and part of May because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Net sales were $339.2 million. The builder of dry and refrigerated vans, tanker bodies and last-mile products used strict cost control measures to hold its profit margin decline to 15% on operating income of $6 million. Earnings per share were $0.00.

Trailer orders roar back in June

U.S. trailer orders rose a head-snapping 333% in June over May as the improving freight market encouraged fleets to spend money on equipment.

Orders of 13,441 units beat June 2019 by 112% after removing canceled orders, according to ACT Research.

“June was much better than previous months and July is shaping up to be even stronger,” said Sean Kenney, a spokesman for trailer builder Hyundai Translead.

May trailer orders improve — to second-weakest month on record

Fleets ordered 3,107 new trailers in May compared to a net of just 209 orders in April when an already softening market collided with the COVID-19 pandemic, ACT Research reported Monday.

The improvement was welcome, but orders still trailed year-ago bookings by 71%. In April,  almost all new orders were offset by cancellations of existing orders.

Total new orders in May were 7,400 before accounting for cancellations, 29% above April’s total of 5,700.
