The EBITDA numbers at Uber Freight continue to climb, boosted by the $2.25 billion acquisition of Transplace that closed in the fourth quarter, with other indicators getting stronger as well.
Uber Freight moved closer in the fourth quarter of 2021 to positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization as measured by EBITDA relative to gross bookings. That ratio was a negative 2.3% in the fourth quarter, up 10.8 percentage points from the fourth quarter of 2020.

Procurement and logistics platform Emerge announced Tuesday it has named supply chain veteran Mark McEntire as the company’s senior vice president of operations.
McEntire has more than 35 years of industry experience, working as a fleet and project manager at J.B. Hunt Transport, followed by over 10 years as general manager of trucking leasing company Penske Logistics and then various executive positions during 17 years at Transplace.

In 2021, tightened capacity, delayed deliveries and surging prices exposed the global supply chain inefficiencies that have harmed the industry for decades.
Consumers responded by ordering early and in bulk, making it even more difficult for companies to project, let alone fix, problems with their logistics networks.
To overcome these challenges, the FreightTech community took pages out of Silicon Valley’s forward-thinking book and began applying technology to these problems, building a strong...

Across the globe, companies are under increasing pressure to pursue social responsibility and clean energy initiatives. All the upheaval that came along with 2020 only accelerated this trend. The COVID-19 pandemic, California wildfires, Midwestern floods, and movements for racial justice gave consumers time and space to evaluate their priorities when selecting brands. However, as these non-financial factors take hold of corporate operations, companies must reevaluate and adapt their existing...

Hot Takes
After months of building trust and showing how dependable you are during the prospecting phase, you finally get the customer to take the plunge and sign with you. New customers, new business, new opportunities for growth and growing pains.
Onboarding new business is oftentimes seen as a necessary evil. Some don’t see value in having onboarding calls with carriers that are new to the account because “we don’t want to bother the customer” or “that’s not an...

Uber Freight has completed its acquisition of Transplace, a $2.25 billion deal that also involved Uber Freight taking on another investment of more than a half-billion dollars.
The completion of the Transplace deal had been expected in the fourth quarter, so its timing was expected. What wasn’t expected was that a little more than a year after it took on a half-billion-dollar investment from Greenbriar Equity Group, it would take on an even bigger investment than the cash that Greenbriar put...

A report from Morgan Stanley’s transportation research team, headed by Ravi Shanker, estimates the value of Uber Technologies’ (NYSE: UBER) “sum of parts” at $72 per share. Of that, about $2 can be attributed to Uber Freight, based on valuing Uber Freight at $3.5 billion.
The $3.5 billion valuation does not have a perfect peer comparison, which would need to be a digital brokerage with public financial data. Other leading digital brokerage companies, like Convoy, are privately held.
But that...

Just as Transplace is about to disappear as a separate company, to be acquired by Uber Technologies and partner with the Uber Freight division, Moody’s Investors Service has opened a window into some of the transportation management company’s finances.
The recently released Moody’s report did not change the company’s B2 long-term debt rating, which is about halfway on the ladder of speculative debt ratings maintained by Moody’s. All of the B ratings are defined as “speculative and subject to...
