Rate imbalance exacerbates trucking capacity issues

Chart of the Week: SONAR Market Dashboard TRAC spot rates for Elizabeth, NJ to Dallas and Los Angeles to Dallas  SONAR: Market Dashboard App

There is no doubt the unprecedented amount of goods demand is the primary contributor to the shortage of transportation capacity, but one consequence of such sudden strong growth has been a disproportionate increase in truckload rates between markets across the U.S.

The two lanes depicted in this week’s chart from the FreightWaves SONAR Market Dashboard are...

Surging fuel costs are masking trucking spot rate decline

Chart of the Week: Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Rack Price, Diesel Truckstop Retail Price, Truckstop.com Average Van Rate per Mile – USA SONAR: ULSDR.USA, DTS.USA, TSTOPVRPM.USA

The price of diesel fuel has increased 23.8% since Aug. 23 while the average spot rate is on par with where it was prior to Labor Day. The big takeaway here is that spot rates would probably be falling more rapidly if not for the surging cost of fuel, but what does this mean for the upcoming holiday season for trucking?

Freight flow imbalance is the real capacity issue

Chart of the Week: Truckstop.com 7 Day Van Rate Per Mile Los Angeles to Dallas and Dallas to Los Angeles  SONAR: TSTOPVRPM.LAXDAL, TSTOPVRPM.DALLAX

The biggest reason for the current truckload capacity shortage is the exacerbation of the majority of goods moving from west to east. This relationship is reflected in the spot rate for freight moving from Los Angeles to Dallas and the return trip. Rates are currently almost three times as expensive moving east than west for the exact same mileage.
