Port strike: No good news

As the clock ticks down to a strike that will close U.S. ports from Maine to Texas after midnight tonight, there were no signs that either side in the dispute was prepared to make any concessions.

The employers’ organization, the United States Marine Alliance (USMX) had, as this was written, released no update since its September 26 announcement that it had filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) seeking an order to require the ILA union to resume bargaining.

What to know about the upcoming ILA port strike

With tens of thousands of union dockworkers set to strike at East and Gulf Coast ports starting Tuesday, here is an overview of the labor dispute and its potential impact on the U.S. economy.

Who is striking?

The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) is the union organizing the upcoming strikes.

Founded in 1877 as the Association of Lumber Handlers, the ILA states on its website that the union today represents upwards of 85,000 longshoremen on the U.S. East and Gulf coasts, the Great...

ILA calls USMX move at NLRB “a publicity stunt”

As a port strike that threatens to close U.S, ports from Maine to Texas on October 1 gets ever nearer, the ILA union is dismissing the most recent reported move by the employers organization the United States Marine Alliance (USMX) as “a publicity stunt.”

Republicans push Biden to intervene if dockworkers strike

WASHINGTON — Republicans lawmakers are warning President Joe Biden to get more involved in the dispute between waterfront labor and container terminal operators at East Coast ports or risk a major supply chain disruption starting at the end of the month.

Does the ILA have a point in objecting to automation?

In two weeks, the current labor contract between the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) is set to expire. More than 70,000 dockworkers across 36 East and Gulf Coast ports from Maine to Houston may strike, potentially bringing a critical segment of the domestic supply chain to a standstill.

In addition to the union’s demand for higher pay, one of its major complaints is the USMX’s investment in automation.

The alliance of employers,...

Could East Coast port strike spread to West Coast?

Could a work stoppage by East Coast longshoremen spread to West Coast ports?

That’s the nontrivial question facing shipping lines, terminal operators and the country at large as U.S. East and Gulf Coast port employers nervously wait out an Oct. 1 strike deadline set by the International Longshoremen’s Association.

The current six-year ILA master contract covering dockworkers and other port employees from Maine to Houston expires Sept. 30. No contract talks have been scheduled.
