USA Truck: Stock surge, improved OR, lower turnover and just 1 pay hike

USA Truck (NASDAQ: USAK) implemented a pay increase for its drivers earlier this month.

That normally isn’t a big deal. Companies have been doing that since late last summer. What was notable about USA Truck, one of the country’s largest truckload carriers and publicly traded to boot, is that it was the company’s first increase in pay since 2018, while other companies have implemented multiple recent increases.

And yet USA Truck says it has managed to cut its turnover rate by 50%.

Add truck drivers and transportation workers to that list as well. For those in the industry, this has never been in dispute, but in 2020, the general public finally recognized the importance of the...

FreightWaves Carrier Summit: Getting real on driver recruitment, retention costs (with video)

FW Carrier Summit

Recruitment and retention are perennial challenges for carriers, but many companies aren’t using the right metrics to determine how much it actually costs to hire and retain drivers, much less align those costs with business operations and revenue goals.

Hendricks said companies will say retention is really important, and have...

Drivers say fleets stepped up during COVID-19

Truck drivers still gripe about long detention times, equipment and adapting to new technology. But they generally feel good about how their companies communicated during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data analyzed by driver retention consultant WorkHound Inc.

“Companies have had to over-communicate, especially as it relates to the pandemic,” WorkHound CEO Max Farrell said during a July 22 webinar sponsored by Women in Trucking. “This extra effort has had an impact on drivers’ satisfaction...

CDC issues long-haul trucker COVID-19 guidelines

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued guidelines tailored to help long-haul truck drivers and their employers deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many of the guidelines repeat the disease prevention recommendations that have been in place for the general public for months: social distancing, hand-washing and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). But specific details aimed at truck drivers on the road and away from home for days underscore the potential for the...
