After all manner of news, rumour and speculation surrounding the possible outcome of DSV’s ~ Sfr4.27bn takeover offer for Panalpina (PAN) over the past eight weeks, many of our readers requested that I challenge the Swiss 3PL’s executive management team, with particular focus on the state of affairs and the outlook for its core ocean freight business.
Well, voila! The company kindly granted me an extensive interview with head of ocean …

Growth prospects in emerging markets ease concern over China-US trade tension
Trade friction between China and the US may be weighing on logistics executives’ minds, but growth prospects in emerging markets are lightening the mood.
According to Agility’s Emerging Markets Logistics Index (EMLI), there is predicted growth of 5% in new markets.
Agility CEO Essa Al-Saleh said: “Those looking for opportunity are finding it in emerging markets, with SMEs with access to tech and mobile banking increasingly driving growth.
“At the same time, logistics …

Panalpina shareholders launch battle for more control as merger talk fills the air
Panalpina’s shareholders have begun a new public battle for more control of the company, as it grapples with potential tie-ups with DSV or Agility.
Yesterday, Panalpina’s major shareholder, Ernst Göhner Foundation (EGF), which holds some 46% of the shares, requested new voting rights of ‘one share, one vote’.
Currently, there is a 5% voting restriction on all shareholders, apart from EGF which has ‘grandfathering rights” having bought its shares before the introduction …

‘Digital leadership and efficiency improvements’ drive Agility profits up 14.5%
While there were double-digit increases all round for Agility in its 2018 results, all eyes are on its potential tie-up with Panalpina.
In an earnings call, chief financial officer Ehab Aziz said he had no information to give on the structure of any deal.
He said the move was driven by “pure industrial logic” and confirmed that only Global Integrated Logistics, which is based in Switzerland, was part of the discussions.
Mr Aziz …

Supply chain radar: DSV – Panalpina – Agility: the vortex increases its pull
Investors following the DSV–Panalpina–Agility story are puzzled as to what could happens next, according to a New York-based portfolio manager I spoke to yesterday, echoing similar views of traders in London.
One swallow
“Agility (AGY) could swallow Panalpina (PAN) overnight, or just take it over and leave the foundation with a minority stake. Either way it would be a good deal for both,” I was told.
I don’t think so.
While many investors still …

Analysis: Panalpina creating a buzz unseen since Mr McLean invented containers
I am good, I thought, on Friday. The very original idea for my usual weekly analysis, is already drafted. The plan now is just to discuss the M&A probabilities and financials of two potential targets for Panalpina (PAN), in case the Agility (AGY) deal does not go through.
Easy peasy?
No.
One, Dachser (DCH), is “out of reach”, I was told. What a pity senior sources got in touch only after I ran all …

Supply chain radar: Panalpina’s master plan has a secret twist and mystery suitor
The master plan drafted by Panalpina (PAN) is so ambitious that it implies the possible involvement of a third player, market sources say, despite the fact that the Swiss 3PL has yet to finalise a deal of any kind with Kuwait-based Agility (AGY).
For the record, a PAN-AGY tie-up has been in the making well before DSV sneaked in with its initial Sfr170 a share proposal for PAN on 16 January.

Supply chain radar: Panalpina goes for a merger of unequals – what if DSV walks away now?
Surprise surprise: Panalpina (PAN) today announced the board of directors confirmed “media reports that it is in discussions with Agility Group (AGY) on potential strategic opportunities with regard to their respective logistics businesses. The discussions between the two companies are at a preliminary stage.”

Grab some popcorn and watch the Panalpina-DSV-Agility soap opera
The twists and turns of the Panalpina saga continue. The very latest news is that investors have expressed concern over a Panalpina tie-up with Agility, with talks confirmed this morning.
The Swiss forwarder also confirmed a revised – all cash – Sfr180 per share offer from DSV, but as reported in The Loadstar Premium on 5 February, Panalpina is hoping to seal a deal with the Kuwaiti logistics company.
