Falling freight rates shutter Iowa trucking company after 24 years

Family-owned Mid Continent Trucking of Denison, Iowa, notified drivers and employees recently that after 24 years, the refrigerated carrier was ceasing operations two days after Thanksgiving because of worsening economic conditions and tumbling freight rates.

An email about the closing created some confusion, but the company says all displaced employees who want to work have since found jobs.

“It was a situation where economics made the decision for us that it was time to get out of the trucking...

Judge orders halt to work on teardown of Interstate 81 through Syracuse

The demolition of the Interstate 81 viaduct that slices through Syracuse, New York, that was set to start soon has been put on hold through a court order.

New York state Supreme Court Judge Gerard Neri, sitting in Onondaga County where Syracuse is located, earlier this month granted the request for an injunction sought by a relatively new group called Renew 81 for All. The suit was filed in late September against the New York State Department of Transportation and several of its leading...

Mass firing blindsides former UFI employees, truck drivers

Former employees of United Furniture Industries, operating under the Lane Furniture brand name, say they were blindsided overnight after receiving either an email or text message instructing them not to report to work Tuesday because their jobs were being immediately terminated “due to unforeseen business circumstances.”

The value of driver training doesn’t stop at hire date

Truck driver recruiting and retention have come into sharper focus in the last few years thanks to the supply chain disruptions the global economy has faced.

At its recent management conference, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) said that despite rising pay, the industry is still facing a shortfall of about 78,000 drivers. That could jump to 160,000 by 2031, the ATA said.

“The good news is rising pay and other factors have helped the industry attract new drivers,” Bob Costello, ATA chief...

Percentage of Brake Safety Week out-of-service orders holds steady in US

Results from Brake Safety Week conducted this year by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance came in at numbers close to the figures from 2021.

The number of vehicles inspected in the U.S. from Aug. 21-27 was 34,402, a significant increase from the 28,694 checked last year. But the out-of-service (OOS) violation rate barely budged — 13.5% last year to 13.6% in 2022.

Meanwhile, there was a notable increase in Canada, where inspections resulted in OOS violations coming in at 17.8% compared to 15.4%...

Companies launch end-to-end program for driver sleep apnea evaluation

Two companies have launched a program they said will make it easier and more affordable for commercial truck drivers to be tested and treated for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

OSA is a potentially serious medical condition that, if left untreated, could impair a driver’s performance and cause life-threatening complications such as stroke.

Under the program, Resonea Inc, a medtech company that developed a smartphone app that the Food and Drug Administration approved in 2019 to screen and test for...

Fleet safety: Why corrective action training must be part of the solution

In many walks of life, average is acceptable. When it comes to trucking fleet safety, though, average may not be good enough.

When an incident occurs, plaintiff lawyers often look into the carrier’s history. Did it perform regular vehicle maintenance? How about driver training? Did it meet regulatory minimum standards?

Even carriers that do this, though, sometimes have gaps, and lawyers are well compensated to find those gaps. For a jury, that gap is what makes the difference when deciding if,...
