Weighing The Pros and Cons of Hydrogen and Ammonia As Fuel Source

  • The power source is a trade-off between space and various factors.
  • It depends on the weight of the fuel and power generator and the total capacity of the ship.
  • Powering the ship must be deducted from the freight earned for carrying cargo.
  • HFO is the normal fuel of choice for ships because it is relatively cheaper.
  • Methanol is a good substitute for HFO and ICE is preferred as the most efficient means of using fuel.
  • Ammonia is twice as energy-rich as liquid hydrogen by weight.

‘Eco Speed’ Identifies Perfect Vessel Speed for Best Fuel Consumption

  • IMO’s new regulation is to ensure that marine engines use a low-sulphur HFO or marine distillate oils, which comply with low-sulphur regulations.
  • The installation of  post-combustion treatments, such as a scrubber system, to curb SOx.
  • The availability of high-sulphur HFO and its price, might greatly affect the return on investment of those owners who opted for scrubbers.
  • ‘Bunker checklist’ supplements the vessel’s own safety management system procedures from pre-bunkering through bunkering to...

IMO’s decision delays implementation of Arctic HFO ban until 2029, NGOs warn

The IMO Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 7) agreed on a draft regulation on heavy fuel oil (HFO) use and carriage in the Arctic, but denounced the inclusion of loopholes in the text, which means the ban will not come into effect until 2029, the Clean Arctic Alliance informed.

The news came following an increased pressure by environmental groups to the IMO to protect the Arctic marine environment from the impacts of international shipping.

Attention drawn to HSFO de-bunkering as IMO 2020 came into force

As the IMO’s 2020 sulphur cap came into effect on 1st January, shipowners will be conscious that a charterer may be less likely to charter a vessel which still has a large quantity of HSFO onboard, the Standard P&I Club noted.

Regulation 14.1.3 of MARPOL Annex VI came into force on 1 January 2020, bringing, among others, the need for shipowners to de-bunker non-compliant fuel (HSFO with sulphur content in excess of 0.5% m/m).

Flag states will now be expected to detect non-compliance and enforce...

What Does IMO 2020 Have in Store for Global Box Shipping?

The Loadstar analyzes if IMO 2020 is the curved ball that acted as a counterweight for box shipping.

The bellwether Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI), which records container spot rates from China to the major tradelanes of the world, will end 2019 on a par with last year – but, as usual, the narrative surrounding how that has been achieved is much more complex.

Dip in container growth

Global container growth has slowed dramatically, with some analysts predicting expansion for the year...
