Hapag-Lloyd First To Convert Large Containership To LNG

Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd has booked the HFO-to-LNG conversion, reports Logistics Middle East.

HFO to LNG conversion

Hapag-Lloyd has registered the HFO-to-LNG conversion of UASC’s 15,000 TEU ‘LNG-ready’ container ship, Sajir, acquired in its 2017 take-over of the Middle East shipping line.

The work will be carried out at China’s Huarun Dadong Shipyard in May 2020.

Duration and cost for the conversion

The project to convert the existing MAN Energy Solutions’ ME-GI engine is expected to take 105 days and...

Clean Arctic Alliance calls for reducing shipping black carbon impacts on Arctic

The Clean Arctic Alliance urged the IMO Member States to reduce the impact of black carbon emissions from international shipping on the Arctic environment, as the UN body gathers in London for a meeting of its MEPC74. During the meeting, a number of issues, including black carbon emissions and heavy fuel oil (HFO) in the Arctic will feature on the agenda.

When black carbon is emitted from ships burning heavy fuel in or near Arctic waters, particles fall on ice or snow, reducing its reflectivity...

Infographic: LNG reduces GHG emissions by 21%

SEALNG and SGMF launched a study according to which GHG reductions of up to 21% are achievable now from LNG as a marine fuel, in comparison to the existent oil-based marine fuels over the entire life-cycle from Well-to-Wake (WtW). The study also confirms that emissions from sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), are close to zero when using LNG compared with current conventional oil-based marine fuels.

LR provides verification to Genoil’s HSFO conversion to 2020-compliant fuel

Lloyd’s Register witnessed a process demonstration, in which the exploration and drilling company Genoil used a hydroconversion upgrader to convert high sulphur heavy fuel oil into IMO 2020-compliant marine fuel. During the desulphurisation process, the sulphur content of an HSFO was reduced from 1.72% to 0.38%.

Although the class society was not present throughout the complete demonstration cycle, the sample analysed from the output sample of the demonstration was 0.38% m/m, in comparison to...

BIMCO Developing Clauses, Contracts Ahead of IMO 2020

  • BIMCO developing two clauses for straightforward compliance provision and Fair allocation between owners and charterers.
  • BIMCO developing a contract for LNG bunkering.
  • Shipowners should be encouraged to work closely with charterers for transition.
  • Extent of heavy fuel oil availability remains uncertain in future.

On the sidelines of the 11th Fujairah Bunkering & Fuel Oil Forum, Platts had an interview with BIMCO’s head of contracts and clauses Grant Hunter. Here’s an excerpt from it.

IG Clubs continues survey triggers for tankers carrying HFO

As part of the industry’s efforts to ensure higher ship standards, the International Group of P&I Clubs (IG Clubs) continues to implement survey triggers for seagoing vessels of 10 years of age or more carrying HFO, the American P&I Club reminded in a new circular.

As a consequence, all sea-going vessels aged 10 years or more which have carried heavy HFO as cargo within the previous 12 months will be subject to condition survey, unless:

  • the vessel has undergone a P&I club condition survey during...

Clean Arctic Alliance stresses HFO use in light of Viking Sky incident

Clean Arctic Alliance published a statement in response to the Viking Sky incident. Viking Sky sent out a distress call, after escaping disaster when its engines failed during a storm in the Norwegian sea.

In light of Viking Sky incident, Dr Sian Prior, Lead Advisor to the Clean Arctic Alliance, commented that the incident should serve as a wake up call.

He continued that many were the factors that helped avert disaster and ensured the safe return of passengers and crew to shore this weekend: the...

Banning HFO from Arctic gets closer

IMO has been pushed to ban heavy fuel oil (HFO) for use and carriage as a fuel in the Arctic. However, on the one hand some want the ban to take place as soon as possible. On the other hand, many are those that support the idea of not banning HFO before knowing the result of an assessment of the impacts, regarding both the environment and the economy of Arctic indigenous and local communities and industries.

Specifically, IBIA’s Unni Einemo stated that PPR 6 agreed on the methodology for the...

MAN to Retrofit Hapag’s Container Vessel to LNG

MAN Energy Solutions has signed a contract for the conversion of a 15,000 TEU container vessel to dual-fuel operation, says an article published in Green Car Congress.

Retrofit to dual-fuel operation

The container vessel MV SAJIR owned by Hapag-Lloyd, serves a route from Asia to northern Europe via the Suez canal.

The pilot project will entail the conversion of an existing, HFO-burning MAN B&W 9S90ME-C engine to a dual-fuel MAN B&W ME-GI (Gas Injection) prime mover capable of running on HFO and...
